Mosaics House

The Mosaics House is on Doutor Castro Street, formerly Batitales St., close to the Main Square. This Domus was an important mansion that, according to the remains found, was built between the I and II centuries, and was inhabited until the middle of. the V century.

Its great drawing room (oecus) and an ante-room attached to it, had spectacular floors made with mosaics of extraordinary quality. Its walls were decorated with paintings. This oecus, with an archade all around, was about 150 sq. metres and the ante-room was around 60 sq.m. The dimensions are an indication of the wealth it housed.

Casa de los Mosaicos
This site was excavated on the occasion of the reconstruction of the modern house above, the archaeological materials remained in an on-site museum, at ground level. This extraordinary museum exhibits materials such as mosaics, wall paintings, column bases, and parts of the former hypocaustum that was used for heating this impressive mansion; they are all of great interest to better understand how every-day life was carried out at the time of the late-Roman empire

A 12-minute audiovisual presentation, shown on a 4-metre screen, further exemplifies what life was like in this noble mansion.
